Good Vibes Only & Color Wheel Pattern Release!

Is there anything happier than a blog tour for a fabric with Good Vibes in its name? I don’t think so and that’s why I was so excited to be asked to work with this fabric by Shayla Wolf of Sassafrass Lane for Windham Fabrics.

Seriously, so much awesomeness! You can’t help but feel happy when you check out the lookbook for this fabric. And I think it’s so cool knowing that the entire thing was photographed with an iPhone!

There are 32 prints in this collection, all full of colorful and positive words and affirmations.

My first project used one of the grey on white word prints as a background. Using thin strips that I ripped from the fabric (because how good do those frayed edges look?!), I fashioned two flowers and a collection of leaves. I positioned them so that the word “Beautiful” could be embellished with lots of beads. This one just makes me so happy!

For my second project, I created a brand new pattern, the Ruffled Color Wheel which, drumroll please, is available TODAY!

When I saw the variety of colors included in the Good Vibes Only fabric, I knew I needed to create a project that used lots of them! What better way to use color than a color wheel!

Also, are you a button lover like I am? This is a fun project to include some of your favorite colorful buttons! So much better than keeping them stored in a jar on a shelf. Ahem, that’s the voice of experience speaking!

Paradigm Showcase Tour

I was beyond excited to work with the new Paradigm fabrics by Sarah Thomas of Sariditty. She is just the sweetest and her brand new fabric matches her personality perfectly! Also, I love Hoffman’s line of Me + You batik fabrics and was excited to see that Sarah had a color curated range of batiks to match her fabrics!

Without further ado, here is my crazy quilt inspired hoop made with both the Paradigm fabrics and the Me + You batiks:

When I saw the doily-inspired gray on white print, I knew I needed to Boho that up! So I cut three of the medallions and attached them to the batik prints.

You’ll notice that in the above picture, the fabric that I used is from this panel:

I love that in just one cut of fabric, I had access to eight fat quarters!

Once I assembled my crazy hoop, it was time to stitch! I rarely use thimbles when I hand stitch, but because I was going through so many layers of fabric to stitch the medallions, a thimble was necessary for me to keep my fingers intact!

When I do have to use a thimble, the Clover Natural Fit thimble is my absolute favorite one. You can find it here. Most thimbles leave me with a claustrophobic feeling (weird, right?!) but this one allows me to have a range of motion while I stitch!

Foundation Fabric Blog Tour

I have been on a color wheel kick lately, making a variety of them from my Fractured Color Wheel pattern. When I was asked to make something with the brand new Foundation fabric line, I knew a color wheel would look amazing in these fabrics.

A combination of geometric designs and every rainbow-colored hue, this fabric could not have been more perfect to create my color wheel.

And now for my project!

You know how sometimes you’re walking down unused railroad tracks and you spy a rusty pile of metal wire and you think to yourself, “if only I had a rainbow-colored pillow to rest my head for a minute while I sit here in the sun?”

Then you’re not alone! I had the same exact thought while carrying this pillow down the unused railroad tracks in my neighborhood! Check it out:

If you follow along with me on Instagram, then you’ll know that machine sewing isn’t exactly my forte or my love. But look what I did…I added a zipper to my pillow cover! This is only the second zipper I have ever sewed…ever…so this is kind of a big deal for me!

The teal and lime green are two of my favorite colors/prints from this line and so I wanted to use both of them in my project!

Here’s a close-up of the embroidered center of my color wheel. It doesn’t get better than beaded triangles!

Coloring with Thread Book Showcase

Late last year, I was excited to work on a stitching project based on a pattern by Tula Pink that was going to be included in her new embroidery book, Coloring with Thread: Stitching a Whimsical World with Hand Embroidery.

Check out that center Octopus hoop in the picture up there (maybe, just maybe, it was stitched by yours truly!)

If you love Tula Pink’s fabric, then, no doubt, you will be excited to get your hands on a book full of her embroidery patterns!

When I was asked to stitch up another pattern from her book as part of the Coloring with Thread blog tour, I couldn’t wait to try Boho-ing up one of her designs: the Double Bunny.

I feel like I need to add this disclaimer before going any further: for my sanity (and yours!), I highly recommend enlarging your chosen patterns before you try this method for yourself. Seriously. Tula Pink designs are gorgeously intricate but cutting so many teeny, tiny fabric pieces might just be enough to push the most patient of fussy cutters to the brink of frustration!

I began with enlarging the Double Bunny pattern.

Enlarging a pattern is incredibly easy if you have an office supply store nearby. Take your pattern in and ask them to make an engineering print in whatever size you need. I enlarged the Double Bunny pattern to 14″ and it fits perfectly in a 14″ hoop.

Once I had my copy of the pattern, I used the techniques outlined in my book, Boho Embroidery to transfer the pattern to a selection of my favorite Tula Pink fabrics.

Here’s what I ended up with once I ironed all of the fabric pieces in place.

Using Madeline Tosh Unicorn Tails yarns and the Stem Stitch, I outlined all of the pieces. You can see what a difference it makes when each piece has been outlined:

And then I just kept on embroidering! I added sequins and beads and finished it up just in the nick of time so that I could share it with all of you! Here’s how it looks all stitched up:

And how about some up close and personal detail shots, because it’s all about the details!

The sequins make these feel like Disco Bunnies, don’t they?!

And there you have it!

If you want to try your hand at an embroidery project like this, here are the specialty Threads and beads that I used:

This yarn is really fun to embroider with….I mean, check out those colors! You can find these “Unicorn Tails” at Mad Tosh.

If you’ve been following along for awhile now, you already know how much I love the Eleganza Perle Cotton from Sue Spargo and Wonderfil Specialty Threads! I used the size #8 and in some cases doubled it up so that my stitches stood out next to the Unicorn Tails. I could have just used a size #5 or #3, which are both thicker, except I was gifted this box of threads and the colors matched perfectly!

Another one of my favorite threads (especially to use when working with beads and sequins) is Sulky Petites. These threads are approximately the weight of 2-strands of a floss like DMC that gets separated, except you can use these right off the spool without separating strands.

And speaking of beads, my favorite seed bead source is Fusion Beads. (How about that neon pink?!) I used size 8 seed beads for this project.

And if all of this seems completely overwhelming and you just want to stitch a pattern, look how completely different this project can be if it is simply embroidered using the Tula Pink color guides and her pattern from the book!

AGF Rayon Blog Tour

Welcome to week 2 of the Art Gallery Fabrics Rayon Blog Tour! Check out the hashtag #agfrayonbloghop for the beautiful projects made from these soft and buttery rayons!

Buttery?! Can that really describe a fabric?! It can! In fact, its the only way I can describe how absolutely soft and smooth these rayons are! If I were a maker of clothing instead of embroiderer of fabric, these would absolutely be a staple of my fabric stash!

Being thinner than a quilting cotton, which is what I’m used to using for embroidery, I wasn’t sure what I was in for when I began this project.

Note: It’s a really good idea when you’re not sure how your fabric will react to adhesives and the high heat of an iron, to test a swatch and make sure your fabric is not at risk of being ruined.

I’m excited to share what I made with my April Rhodes rayons, not having worked with rayons much before this. I loved the challenge of straying from the comfortable world of quilting cottons and venturing into the sleek world of rayons! And, you didn’t expect me to whip up a skirt or dress, right?! Okay, good, because I didn’t!

Fabric designs from April Rhodes make me feel like a world traveler. To me, they embody the spirit and colors and visuals of exploration and adventure. I wanted to capture that sense of adventure in my project, the Polaroid Photo hoop.

Combining the rayons with quilting weight cotton worked really, really well. If anything, stitching though layers of fabric (when one of those layers is a rayon!), went better than I had planned. Working delicate stitches on several layers of cotton can be tedious at times, but the thinner weight of the rayon worked great with the stitches and beads and sequins that I layered onto the fabric.

I love how photos, and especially Polaroid photos, capture a moment in time. These “photos” of fabric have a vintage vibe that captures the essence of exploration.

Working with the patterns of the fabric, I embellished with like colors in my favorite Eleganza Threads and with one of the brand new seed bead palettes from Fusion Beads. I love using seed beads and jumped at the chance to try out a hand selected palette of bead colors! This one is Autumn Colors and went perfectly with my fabrics.

*Note: these are size 8 seed beads. If you are new to using beads in your embroidery, I would suggest starting with a size 8 or the slightly larger size 6 seed beads.

Improv Fabric Blog Tour

I was so happy to be asked to join this Blog Tour promoting Amy Friend’s FIRST fabric line of modern blenders, Improv! You can read more about it and also a great interview with Amy on the Bernatex blog.

When I first looked at these fabrics and the delicate colors of peach and citron stood out to me. The delicate colors made me think of the wispiness of hydrangeas in a summer garden. Hydrangeas are one of my favorite flowers and were even the base of my wedding bouquet (only the more fall colors of a dried hydrangea…plums, golds, olives)! My husband, an avid gardener, has planted more varieties in our garden than I even realized existed!

With hydrangeas on my mind, I chose to work with several of the white fabrics for the hydrangea flower, with the leaves in Citron and background in Peach, both in the same print.

The citron green of this fabric against the greens of nature feels almost electric, doesn’t it?! That shade is one of my very favorite green colors!

Once I created my pattern, I began to cut out flowers, leaves and a stem from the fabric, as you can see here:

And after appliquéing, embroidering and embellishing, here is my finished project!

This is a large 14″ hoop that I painted a pale grey to match the grey in the white fabrics.

Looking even closer, you can see the various stitches that I used. I also added a smattering of champagne sequins between the hydrangea petals to further emphasize the wispiness of the flower.

Blithe Fabrics Blog Tour

I was honored to be able to work with Katarina Roccella’s beautiful new fabric line, Blithe for her blog tour. Katarina is a designer for Art Gallery Fabrics and I am a huge fan of her fabric designs! A muted palette of grey, teal, pale pink and even a few metallics mixed in…this is the perfect end of winter, hint of spring fabric line!

For all of the hoops, I used size 5 Eleganza Perle Cotton from Sue Spargo. This hoop was made using the Bird Songs design from Blithe.

I added lots and lots and lots of French Knots in pink, orange, white, grey and black to the buds on the branches. I picture this tree blossoming in early spring with the greyness of winter far behind!

For this hoop, I used a background of Winterberries in Snow which has metallic gold berries flecked throughout. The butterfly was cut from the Arcadia Bliss in Shine pattern. I used large teal Lazy Daisy stitches on the butterfly and I added grey Feather Stitch details to the background.

This snow bunny was also cut from the Arcadia Bliss in Shine fabric and the background is Winterberries in Gold. A teal Chain Stitch border and offset Lazy Daisys in hues of pink and orange and teal add to the spring like feel of this hoop.

I love the lacy, almost doily-like, pattern of the Arcadia Bliss fabric and I tried to replicate that with additional stitching on the bunny.

This is the only hoop that I used all wool thread to embroider on the fabric. Ellana Wool Threads from Sue Spargo / Wonderfil Specialty Threads are delicate and yet vibrant in color. On this motif from Joy Wreaths, I introduced brighter colors as I embroidered Bullion Knots, Cross Stitch and Lazy Daisies. It was a delicate balancing act…embroidering just enough to let the fabric shine through and not going too crazy with stitchery!

For my final hoop, I used several fabrics, including this beautiful quote on linen from the Eternal Nature fabric, to weave a pattern. Using my trusty Wefty Needle, I used the fabrics listed above and added several strips of the Evergreens in Dusk for a lovely, woodsy feel. I also added a snowy owl from Bird Songs and embroidered him in whites and greys.

I love working with Art Gallery Fabrics and especially enjoyed working with these gorgeous Blithe fabrics as winter winds down and spring is not too far away! I hope you enjoy these hoops as much as I enjoyed creating them!

Heartland Fabrics Blog Stop

I was asked by Amy Friend of During Quiet Time to join in with a handful of other makers for the Heartland Fabrics Blog Tour. Have you checked out Amy’s Gilmore Girls coffee cup sew along yet? Pause here so you can go check out her character inspired coffee cups! Is anyone else as excited for the Netflix reboot as I am?!

But back to Heartland Fabrics! Designed by Pat Bravo for Art Gallery Fabrics, these fabrics are a muted palette of Scandinavian inspired designs. I say muted, because I’m usually all about the color…the more saturated the better! It was a challenge that I welcomed to tone down my usual color palette and work with the palest shades of mint, ivory and pink!

Choosing my threads was easy, having picked up several shades of the newest Eleganza Perle Cotton thread colors at Quilt Market. The newest colors (available very soon!) are based on a more primitive color palette and were just the colors I needed for stitching on these Heartland Fabrics. For the delicate bit of sparkle, I used Cosmo Shabon-dama, which I also picked up at Quilt Market.

I chose to create a hoop art trio from my fabric selections.
